Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010. 7pm.
Location: King Avenue United Methodist Church, 299 King Ave, Columbus, 43201.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance is held in November each year to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender, each was a victim of violence based on bias or prejudice against transgender people.

The list of deaths available at http://www.rememberingourdead.org only contains those deaths known to the transgender community or that have been reported to the media. The Day of Remembrance is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.

This year’s vigil will take place on Thursday, November 18, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at King Avenue United Methodist Church, located at 299 King Avenue, Columbus, 43201. King Avenue United Methodist Church is handicap accessible. The vigil will be ASL interpreted.

Remember. Honor. Empower.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance is intended to raise public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media does not perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of transgender people who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance gives transgender people and their allies a chance to step forward and stand in vigil, memorializing those who have died by anti-transgender violence.

Community Partners include: TransOhio, Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization (BRAVO), King Avenue United Methodist Church, North Congregational United Church of Christs’ Gender Fold Action Alliance, New Leaf Columbus, Stonewall Columbus, The Ohio State University GLBT Alumni Society, Equality Ohio, HRC-Columbus, Columbus AIDS Task Force, The Ohio State University Multicultual Center.

Thursday, November 11 · 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Ohio Statehouse, South Side, Across from the Ohio Theater on State Street

Patriots’ Pride is a Veterans Day celebration in honor of all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender individuals, (LGBT) and other sexual minorities that have served their country honorably and have never, throughout the history of the United States of America, been treated equally.

We seek to remember our proud tradition across America, in small towns and big cities alike. Now, more than ever, it is important that each of us take a stand to end the horrific discrimination that has been on-going, and in fact encouraged by the very existence of the prejudiced legislation that governs our Armed Forces. As patriots we know our America can do better!

“On November 11 every State, district, and territory of the USA will have the opportunity to brag about how wonderful the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) employees of the Department of Defense, both past and present, really are,” said Lisa Kove, Executive Director of DOD FED GLOBE, who organized the event. “We need to let the world know we are as good as anyone they let serve as openly straight.”

Background

Unfortunately, the GLBT community continues to be the group most severely affected by HIV. There is a serious need for assistance and Stonewall’s food drive will provide direct help to members of the community who are dealing with the virus. Members of the LGBT community account for nearly half of the more than one million people living with HIV in the U.S. With 4% of Ohio’s population making up the GLBT community, many Ohioans could be living with this virus and could otherwise greatly benefit from any and all donations received by the drive.

LifeCare Alliance is a not-for-profit organization that provides a comprehensive array of health and nutrition services to older adults and chronically ill or homebound residents of Central Ohio through its signature programs: Project OpenHand-Columbus, Groceries-to-Go, Meals-on-Wheels, Senior Dining Centers, Wellness Centers, Help-at-Home, Visiting Nurse Association, and Columbus Cancer Clinic.
The Groceries-to-Go pantry provides groceries, personal hygiene items and cleaning supplies to individuals of LifeCare Alliance’s Project OpenHand-Columbus program which serves clients living with HIV-AIDS. Stonewall Columbus encourages everyone to support this vital program through your generous donations during this drive. The pantry drive will collect general donation items as well as pet products and food, since many people who are struggling in living with HIV may not be able to properly care for a pet.

Columbus, Ohio 43201

AARP Ohio is excited to invite you to attend our conversations on LGBT aging. Won’t you please join us for what we hope will be a lively and frank discussion about opportunities for AARP Ohio to be more effective and relevant to you and your community?

We will discuss ways in which AARP can best address the needs of the LGBT community and how the LGBT community can have an impact on the direction, policies and services of AARP. Through an open exchange of ideas we hope to discover new ways of ensuring that our LGBT citizens and their unique needs are equally represented and considered within the AARP organization.

Please mark your calendar and share this invitation with family and friends.

We look forward to an engaging and productive conversation with you!

Join AARP on Facebook www.facebook.com/AARPOH

Follow AARP on Twitter http://twitter.com/AARPOhio

Background

Throughout AARP’s history, we’ve been devoted to improving quality of life for all people as they age and to bringing about a society where, as people age, they can fully participate without discrimination.

AARP members span three generations and our members are not homogenous. In no way does a person’s race, gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation deter us from carrying out our mission.

As our founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus said, “What we do, we do for all.” And what we do is help people, including every ethnicity and sexual orientation or gender expression, to chart their course through some “ageless realities.” These ageless realities come down to five common needs:

The need for financial well being and a secure future

The need for health

The need to contribute, to volunteer and give back

The need for community – family, friends, other social networks

The need to play and enjoy life

We also have common concerns. Will we outlive our money? Will we be able to maintain independence, choice and control? Will we be cared for by strangers instead of loved ones? Will we become increasingly invisible, isolated and ignored?

AARP is acutely aware of the intersection of aging and diversity. If AARP is to thrive as an organization, the face of our members, staff and volunteers must reflect the face of America. And this means that we must be relevant to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Ohioans.

Stonewall Columbus would like to thank all of our community partners and vigil attendees for helping to make Spirit Day 2010 a huge success. On Wednesday, October 20th, over 600 people of all ages gathered at Goodale Park to show their spirit for our community, to mourn the lives lost to suicide among our LGBT youth and to inspire awareness and action for this important issue. Brave survivors shared stories of their journeys, community leaders rallied the crowd and adult & young people performed poems and songs about hope. The evening, which concluded with a candlelight vigil and moment of silence, was a true expression of solidarity and its heartfelt message undoubtedly saved lives. Thank you all!

Stonewall Columbus will hold a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Gazebo at Goodale Park in Columbus, Ohio. This event coincides with the newly created “Spirit Day” which recognizes the loss of lives to suicide directly related to anti-gay bullying. A short program will be held with speakers from our community. Thank you to Vox and Unecc for graciously agreeing to perform at this event.

Stonewall Columbus will provide a limited number of candles and also purple ribbons which read, “Spirit Day 2010.” Resource materials will be on hand for distribution.

Attendees are encouraged to wear purple on this day, since the color purple in the LGBT rainbow flag represents Spirit.

“It is very difficult for those who are suffering to reach out,” said Karla Rothan, Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus. “By holding this public event, it is our hope that we will encourage people who are being bullied and harassed because they are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender to speak out and get help.”

In this world premiere musical by Tony nominee Bill Russell (Side Show, Pageant) and Drama Desk nominee Peter Melnick (Adrift in Macao), smoking has been outlawed in America, but Pam is finding it impossible to quit. Her struggle is complicated by husband Ernie, who dreams of being a rock star, and their teenage son Jimmy, who listens to so much rap music he’s convinced he’s black. Meanwhile their nosy, evangelistic, anti-smoking neighbor Phyllis lurks around every corner trying to catch Pam mid-puff. Will Pam kick the habit or fight for the right to light up as The Last Smoker in America? Columbus will be the first to find out in this original, raucous, irreverent musical.
