In this world premiere musical by Tony nominee Bill Russell (Side Show, Pageant) and Drama Desk nominee Peter Melnick (Adrift in Macao), smoking has been outlawed in America, but Pam is finding it impossible to quit. Her struggle is complicated by husband Ernie, who dreams of being a rock star, and their teenage son Jimmy, who listens to so much rap music he’s convinced he’s black. Meanwhile their nosy, evangelistic, anti-smoking neighbor Phyllis lurks around every corner trying to catch Pam mid-puff. Will Pam kick the habit or fight for the right to light up as The Last Smoker in America? Columbus will be the first to find out in this original, raucous, irreverent musical.

We are looking for Stonewall Columbus and Columbus Pride photos, video, printed materials, and memorabilia from the last 30 years to showcase our 30th anniversary in 2011.

In 1981 four young activists, frustrated with the discrimination that permeated central Ohio, staged a march to draw attention to the issues that face our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. That demonstration inspired others and by September 23rd of that year Craig Huffman, Val Thogmartin, Keith McKnight and Craig Covey created the articles of incorporation of a newly formed organization that would help people in the community. It was called Stonewall Union. At a meeting on July 14, 1983 Susan Pyle was elected president and Cindie Cyrus was elected secretary of the board of trustees and a nonprofit organization was born.

Now here we are, Stonewall Columbus, thirty years later. We owe a debt of gratitude to those individuals who stood up and did something when most people were afraid to take the chance. In 2011, Stonewall Columbus celebrates thirty years of service to central Ohio. Our marketing team has created a logo to commemorate this historic milestone. We are hoping that all of you have fond memories of Stonewall Columbus and have saved some of the memorabilia from past Prides and other special events. If so, please send them to John Herman. We are working on gathering materials that will be on display at our Pride celebration next June. This will be our 30th Pride as well and we realize that it may seem far away but gathering things from three decades takes time so please join us for this nostalgic year.

Send your Stonewall Columbus or Columbus Pride photos and video here

Email it to info@stonewallcolumbus.org with History in the subject line.

or Mail to:

We can’t wait for everyone to experience the week long party that comes with the 5,000 players and fans at the NAGAAA 2010 Gay Softball World Series to be held August 13-21. It’s hard to describe the immensity of the event, but we can promise you that it’s going to be huge for the city and guaranteed to be fun for everyone.
BUT, we can’t pull off this big party without your help! We hope to harness the energy and pride from June to help us show visitors from across the US and Canada what Columbus has to offer.

Here is one way you can be a part of the excitement: Volunteer!
There are 1,200 3-4 hour shifts that need to be filled throughout the week of the world series, August 13-21. Shifts are various times during the days from morning to night and cover a wide range of opportunities. See all the shifts that are currently available and register on the 2010 GSWS Volunteer website at: http://ow.ly/24TKF

While we would love for you to take multiple shifts, covering just one shift will help us tremendously. Contact your friends and schedule to work your shifts together! Sign-up early to be sure to get the opportunity that you want. Please e-mail 2010volunteer@clgsa.net if you have questions about volunteer opportunities.

For over fifteen years the center has been able to offer free parking to its members and guests at the Center on High. Free parking has been a huge benefit to the entire Short North community, however, beginning in late May the Center on High will be charging for parking. The Short North has become extremely popular and oftentimes our parking lot is full with guests of area restaurants and retail shops. Maintaining the lot and surrounding grounds has become increasingly more expensive for the organization. Revenue from the lot will go directly back to the center. With these funds Stonewall Columbus will be able to better serve the thousands of LGBT people in central Ohio who seek help at the Center on High. More information will be made available when rates and hours are finalized.

Stonewall Columbus Executive Director Karla Rothan speaks out on our behalf in the press and to students in classrooms.

In the Press: (excerpt from Columbus Dispatch, April 17)

A recent article appeared in the Columbus Dispatch discussing President Obama’s directive to extend hospital visitation rights to gay partners and to honor their choices about who may make their health care decisions. Obama’s order, which must be written into rules by the Department of Health and Human Services, seeks to remedy the discrimination that same-sex couples can face when one of them – or one of their children – becomes ill.

Advocates say some hospitals have barred them from intensive-care units, which might permit only family visitors, and haven’t always respected their right to make medical decisions for an ill or injured partner. In Columbus, which has a large gay population, most hospitals are fairly progressive, local gay-rights organizations say. Still, family conflicts can make for terrible snags.

Karla Rothan, Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus, agreed that most doctors and hospitals here are cooperative. But it still isn’t easy.

“Gay and lesbian people go to great lengths to have all their paperwork together,” she said.

Sometimes, Rothan said, if a partner dies and there is an autopsy, they find that the coroner can’t release the body to them because of strict next-of-kin rules.

“There’s about a thousand different rights that we don’t have,” she said, “because we can’t legally marry.”

In the Classroom:

Karla Rothan, Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus, speaks to Ohio students about LGBT issues. As it turns out, many of the students have some surprising and challenging ideas of what it means to be an LGBT person.

How does the 2010 Census count lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people?

The 2010 Census does not ask about sexual orientation or gender identity. LGBT people living with a spouse or partner can identify their relationship by checking either the “husband or wife” or “unmarried partner” box.

How do same-sex couples answer the relationship question?

The 2010 Census will be the first to report counts of both same-sex partners and same-sex spouses. The person filling out the form (Person 1) is asked to identify how all other individuals in the household are related to him or her.

Census data are based on how individuals self identify and how couples think of themselves. Same-sex couples who are married, or consider themselves to be spouses, can identify one other adult as a “husband or wife.” Other same-sex couples may instead decide to use the term “unmarried partner.” In general, people who identify as unmarried partners are in a close personal relationship but are not married or do not think of themselves as spouses.

Census data are based on how individuals self identify. This includes same-sex couples who live somewhere their relationship is not recognized.

What about transgender individuals?

The 2010 Census asks a question about each person’s sex. Transgender respondents should select the sex with which they identify. Mark only one box.

How do I answer the race and ethnicity question?

The 2010 Census includes two questions about race and ethnicity. Note that the question about ethnicity is separate from the question about race. Further, the race question allows respondents to check all boxes that apply.

A note to bi-racial/ethnic couples

Census reports some statistics on the race/ethnicity of the “household.” Bi-racial/ethnic couples should note that this is determined using the race/ethnicity of Person 1, the person who fills out the Census form for the household.
